“A woman is closest to being naked when she is well dressed”

From 1930-1934 Fulco Santo Stefano della Cerda, Duke of Verdura designed costume jewelry for Chanel. He was greatly influenced by art history as was Coco Chanel. These influences brought them together to create jewelry that looked very medieval or barbaric. Born in the Mediterranean of Sicily, Verdura would have been inundated with the image of the Maltese cross growing up. This holds true for Coco as well, being raised by nuns in a convent. Coco took many ideas from the convents of her childhood, so it is likely that is where she became fond of this image. Over the years Coco would reinterpret the Maltese cross in different costume jewelry designs, from necklaces, pins and more bracelets as well as reinvent her enamel cuff bracelets with various stone orientations.

In 2005, Chanel is once again influenced by designs of yesteryear. The Paris-Tokyo collection has a gothic Maltese cross cuff bracelet. This collection also has monogramed cuff bracelets to offer. It is amazing how small changes to bracelets designed seventy five years ago can modernize something that fits perfectly for today.

This Fall Chanel has reissued the epic design that started it all, the original 2.55 purse. Launched in February 1955, this quilted lovely is complete with double chain shoulder strap that allows a woman’s hands to be free, a special invention by Coco Chanel. Subdued turn clasp is sans the CC claps we are used to, making it more discrete. Double flap closure, and exterior love letter pocket complete the design. The purse is being created in seven sizes and three colors; gray with ruthenium, white with antique nickel, and black with aged gold hardware. Prices range from $1795-2490. You have to see these bags to truly appreciate them. The leather is deliciously distressed, having a wrinkly look resembling your great grand mothers antique leather couch. The colors look like oil paintings, there is so many layers worked into the leather. Though the chain strap is not the woven chain and leather strap we are used from Chanel, it is so charming and recognizable. How many designers effectively use a chain strap? Near to none! The chain is akin to a piece of vintage jewelry. It is three linking chains, the middle having a delicate filigree pattern stamped onto to metal. Details like this are awe inspiring. The purses may strike some as old fashion, others say classic. It is the perfect compliment to vintage inspired designer clothes that are on the market now. If words like timeless, vintage, classic, and feminine define your style, than this is the purse for you! Don’t miss out as waitlists are already growing. These darlings are due to ship August or September in the US market. Europe and Canada are already releasing these purses.

“Fashion has become a joke. The designers have forgotten that there are women inside the dresses. Most women dress for men and want to be admired. But they must also be able to move, to get into a car without bursting their seams! Clothes must have a natural shape.”

If you are a Park Avenue princess, you can wear your hair as big as you want to! Chanel presents models wearing a creative 1960’s coffiture to match up with perfectly classic suits and dresses that you can wear at twenty or ninety. The show started off with the traditional suits and cocktail dresses, but quickly heads into long debutant and showgirl frocks dripping in beads, netting and feathers. Speaking of showgirls, Dita Von Tesse, burlesque society star and fiancée to Marilyn Manson attended sitting front row. She was picking out a gown for an up coming photo shoot. She might have her eye on this pink and black confection with a hint of Victoriana meets Barbie’s bubble dress.

“Hidden luxury” is the theme Karl stamped this collection with. Luxury is concocted from fabric’s rich in details, all the things haute couture is best known for. Dresses are woven with metallic threads, ribbons, layers of wool and net. There is not only beading, but heavy layers of it. Feathers peak from every seam. The primary colors here are the obvious; black, white, gold, and pink with a random splash of rainbow in a few pieces. These rich and sumptuous pieces are made to be red carpet Oscar show stoppers. The strapless black and white feather dress would be a perfect choice.

The whole collection meets with great approval, but a few pieces are still questionable. Though sometimes it is nice to be nostalgic over the 1980′s era, these “Dynasty” dresses above might just be worth leaving behind. Does Karl hope that one of the teen idol actresses will wear this last atrocity to their prom? It is also hard to see what Karl wanted to portray with his gaudy beaded rainbow dress. Well not everything is perfect, even in the world of Chanel.

“A style does not go out of style as long as it adapts itself to its period. When there is an incompatibility between the style and a certain state of mind, it is never the style that triumphs.”
